Character Name: Sekreuz "Setz" Trenkel Navarus
Canon: Crepuscule
Canon Point:Post-Part 1. As of 4/22/14, Ch. 148.
Background/History: Wiki entry.
Personality:
"[Setz] really pisses me off...! He bluntly said it's none of his business! She's part of his student council! Magic or no magic, I'd rather just ignore him for the rest of my life!" — Lark
"... You didn't take his hand? I've always thought you were really timid. You only do what you're told to do. Haven't you always wanted someone to extend his hand to you like that?" — Bathory
In contrast to the cheerful and friendly child that existed before, Setz is now cold and indifferent, to the point where others have described him as possessing an emotionless voice or emotionless eyes. Even his own fiancée is utterly amazed when he smiles at her, and indeed, Setz's default expression tends to be a blank one at best and a frown or scowl at worst. Even in times of distress, he doesn't allow himself to show sadness, instead carrying on with the same apathy on the surface as always. He generally treats everyone around with a distant attitude, reinforcing the image of the stuck-up rich kid. As expected of his role as the vice-president of the student council, he's stern, hard-working (and expects the same of others), and all about 'dignity' and 'setting an example' and all that. He has no time for nonsense and makes that clear to others. All things considered, he can certainly come across as mean and unlikable.
That said, though Setz may be cold, he is far from cruel. His occasional jerk-ish behaviour doesn't stem from any malicious tendencies on his part; either you've done something to deserve it or, in most cases, he's simply trying to maintain a 'proper' appearance, hence his stoic personality. Having been raised with that kind of mindset by his far stricter father, he does his best to act as how a member of the esteemed Navarus family should. If that means his manners suffer, then so be it. That's not to say he has no sense of etiquette, though—rather, it's the opposite. In Angela's words: "He's really... too formal." He'll apologize if he knows he's at fault, thank you if appropriate, etc. Setz is almost robotic at times with how, in a sense, dull and by-the-book he is, lacking a certain degree of life in him.
In a way, one could even say that Setz is, in fact, generally motivated by the idea of doing the right thing. He's not one to act on personal desire, so most of what he does is for others' benefit, even if he does it in a very aloof manner. As a member of the student council, he works hard—much harder than any of the other members, for that matter—without complaint to maintain order in the school. Not because he's some kind of control freak, but because it doesn't seem to actually occur to Setz that he should be doing anything else or be living for himself.
On that note, Setz tends to be something of a doormat. Though he's assertive and forceful when it comes to his duties, he has difficulty speaking about and acting on his own, personal desires, as mentioned—hence why Bathory calls him "timid". When hurt, he generally won't push back. This stems from Setz's deep-seated issues, in that he desperately wants to be needed. His father (namely, his disapproval) is the primary example of this, but in turn, it has extended to the rest of Setz's relationships as well. As he feels useless, he does everything he can to overturn that feeling. This forms a large part of his attachment to Carne, as she's the only one who "always needs [him]." Similarly, Setz has a tendency to point the finger at himself. It's his fault for lashing out at Nil and thus forcing Quz to use his ability, all it takes is for Nil to tell him that Carne going on a rampage is his fault and he believes it, etc. It's because of this passive and self-deprecating mindset that Setz has difficulty making notable progress, as he's somewhat resistant to change. He's not the kind of person who has epiphanies or looks within himself—he needs other people to push him forward.
Furthermore, not helping Setz's emotional instability is his loneliness. Because of his lineage, he knows that there are few people who look at him and don't think of his family, making it difficult to form meaningful connections. Over the course of his life, he loses the first friend he ever makes, becomes unable to depend on his faithful servant when the man loses his memory of the nature of Setz's birth (i.e. one of his deepest secrets), and is left clinging to his clueless fiancée as a result. As he puts it, when he discovered the aforementioned secret, he was left having to struggle with it on his own. It's likely because of this that he tends to try and shoulder everything himself, as he is unable to fully connect with others. No matter how close one is with Setz, there's a wall that surrounds him that he doesn't really know how to let down. As stated before, Setz isn't one to express his feelings so easily, meaning that he can't quite express affection towards others properly. Furthermore, he would rather bury himself in work than, say, openly grieve. This is presumably due to a mixture of his father's influence (being told constantly that he must behave properly), past experience of what happens when he snaps, and his acknowledged inability to open up his heart to others.
As should be obvious, Setz has severe self-worth problems. Aside from his complex about being needed and useful, he holds a large level of self-loathing, considering himself to be a "monster". This is due to Nil calling him such, after learning about Setz's mother, with his own father suggesting that that wasn't necessarily false. Altogether, this 'revelation' significantly contributed to Setz's current depressive attitude, knowing that he's a child who should've been born and thus died hundreds of years ago—that is, an abnormality—and being unable to tell anyone lest they shun him or Quz has to erase their memory. Consequently, the circumstances of Setz's birth is, as said, one of his biggest secrets, and one he does not take kindly to being brought up, directly or indirectly.
At the end of the day, however, Setz honestly isn't such a bad guy. He's nowhere near as amiable as he once was, but underneath it all, he's still the same kid who simply wants friends, even if he's much more awkward about it. In spite of his indifferent personality, he frequently worries over those he cares about, such as Carne or Lark. He's evidently attached to Carne—perhaps not as a lover, as she would've liked, but still as family or a close friend. He also looks out for Angela and Lark, even when he'd cut off ties with them and Lark had, albeit inadvertently, hurt him badly. Once the bridge is somewhat repaired, he's noticeably less cold and, much to their surprise, even goes as far as to seek out their company once during his free time, however awkwardly. He's also willing to go against the aforementioned 'strict and proper' mindset for those important to him, such as when he discreetly provokes the school into using their resources (and potentially risking his father's reputation) to locate Angela when she goes missing. While Setz no longer expresses it the same way, he still cares plenty.
Abilities/Powers:
Though Setz has yet to be seen using magic (which takes the form of being able to manipulate forces through formulas and incantations—e.g. forming a fireball, creating a light/smoke screen), he is mentioned to be capable of it, as well as having been trained in martial arts. He's presumably fairly competent at both, as they are to make up for his lack of a special 'ability'. Additionally, as juniors at Arzew take expert level swordsmanship classes, it can be assumed that he's at least a decent swordsman as well.
As a pureblood vampire, he is capable of extracting claws. It has yet to be mentioned if he has any other characteristics from his heritage currently relevant to him.
As of 4/22/14, he can also manipulate fire.
As a vampire in general, he presumably has enhanced strength, agility, and the like, compared to the average human. However, he also suffers from the following weaknesses:
• sunlight
• holy water
• silver
• garlic
Items/Weapons: Just the clothes on his back and the ribbon he gave Carne. As of 4/22/14, he also has two holy stones with magic sealed within them.
